San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO - Kenny Agostino netted the game-winning goal just twelve seconds into sudden death overtime as the Stockton Heat skated away with a 2-1 overtime victory over the San Diego Gulls on Sunday afternoon at Valley View Casino Center.

The overtime point lifted the Gulls (36-22-3-2) within a single point of clinching a berth in the AHL Calder Cup playoffs. Stockton (30-28-2-2) kept its fading playoff dreams alive for another game.

Rookie Kalle Kossila, appearing in his first professional game for the Gulls after signing amateur tryout agreement (ATO) out of St. Cloud State University in Minnesota, scored San Diego's lone goal on the power play. His wrist shot from left circle at 11:16 of the second period beat Heat netminder Nick Schneider, who otherwise stopped 29-of-30 shots faced to post the victory.

Tyler Wotherspoon's blue line goal off a Stockton draw equalized the score just 1:07 later in the frame, sneaking through traffic to get past San Diego goalie Matt Hackett at 12:23 of the second.

Overtime saw San Diego win the opening draw, only to lose the puck quickly at center ice. Freddie Hamilton's diagonal pass through the slot stuck on Agostino's stick, who fired home the game-winner in quick fashion.

The Gulls return to home ice on Wednesday night when they play host to the Bakersfield Condors.

NOTES: San Diego lost when scoring the game's first goal, only their third loss of the season when scoring first (27-0-2-1)...the Gulls have still not suffered a regulation loss when netting the game's first score...Shea Theodore picked up an assist along with Ondrej Kase on the Kossila score...Theodore has four assists in two games since being returned to the Gulls from the NHL's Anaheim Ducks...Brett Kulak had assists on both Stockton scores...the Gulls were 1-for-5 on the power play, the Heat 0-for-2 (and 0-for-their-past-27).

THREE STARS

1st Star: STK Kenny Agostino (GWG); 2nd Star: SD Kalle Kossila (1-0=1); 3rd Star: STK Nick Schneider (29 saves on 30 shots, win)
