WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Connor Brickley led the scoring attack with a goal and two assists, as the Portland Pirates defeated the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, 5-3, on Sunday evening at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.

A second-year pro, Brickley set a new personal best for points in a game with three, while Cameron Gaunce and Wayne Simpson each picked up a pair of assists for the visiting Pirates.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton took an early lead just 1:24 into the contest when Jake Guentzel pinballed a shot off the post and then off the back of Pirates goalie Sam Brittain for his first career AHL goal.

Dustin Jeffrey extended the Penguins' lead to 2-0 at 10:48 of the opening period for his ninth point in his last seven games.

Portland cut the deficit in half with a man advantage marker from Dylan Olsen at 17:44 of the first.

Brickley netted another power play goal for the Pirates at 5:10 of the second period to tie the game, 2-2.

A minute and 41 seconds later, Niclas Andersén, playing in his 500th professional game, lasered a shot in and out of Brittain's glove and Jean-Sébastien Dea was there to bat in the rebound. Dea's quick response put the Penguins back on top, 3-2.

Brett Olson got free for another equalizer at 9:16 of the middle frame, and Logan Shaw followed up with a breakaway goal with 1:30 left in the second, giving the Pirates their first lead of the game, 4-3.

Shane Harper put Portland up by two, 5-3, 2:33 into the third period with what would be the game's final goal.

Brittain made 30 saves on 33 shots, while Tristan Jarry saved 17 of the 22 shots thrown his way.

Portland finished the game two-for-two on the power play. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was unable to score on its two man advantage opportunities.

The Penguins have the potential to clinch a berth in the Calder Cup Playoffs in their next game, Friday, April 8 against the Lehigh Valley Phantoms at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza. Puck drop between the Phantoms and Penguins is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
