Quantity Beats Quality; 'Hounds Fall, 5-3

August 22, 2021 - Texas League (TL)
Midland RockHounds News Release

"Quantity beat quality" ... in a manner of speaking ... as Amarillo defeated the RockHounds, 5-3, Saturday night in front of more than five thousand fans (5,215) at Momentum Bank Ballpark.

The RockHounds scored three runs on one swing ... a three-run home run off the bat of Jhonny Santos ... while the Sod Poodles scored single runs in five different innings for the win.

Ben DeLuzio tripled in the top of the first and scored the game's first run on a wild pitch and the Sod Poodles pushed the lead to 2-0 in the fourth on a double from Luis Basabe and an RBI single from Jancarlos Cintron (who went 3-for-3 with a walk).

When Stone Garrett homered in the top of the fifth, the solo shot gave Amarillo the first lead of more than two runs (for either team) through the first 41 innings of the series.

Cintron singled in the sixth and Dominic Miroglio's line drive got under the glove of left fielder Elvis Peralta for an RBI triple, making the score 4-0.

Max Schuemann ( see "Kibbles & Bits," below) singled to open the home half of the sixth and Jonah Bride drew a one-out walk, setting the table for Santos, who launched a three-run drive over the high wall in left, cutting the Amarillo lead to 4-3.

DeLuzio walked in the seventh and scored on Garrett's second RBI of the game (a single to right) to build the lead back to two runs and relievers Jeff Bain, Mitchell Stumpo (holds) and Blake Rogers (save) combined to pitch 3â..." scoreless innings to seal the win.

The teams wrap up the series (and the RockHounds finish their current homestand) with a Sunday matinee (2:00). Sunday's game will decide the winner of the "Oil Pan Trophy," signifying the winner of the season series between the RockHounds and Sod Poodles. The RockHounds lead the 2021 season series, 12-11, and would win the series outright with a victory Sunday. Amarillo won the inaugural trophy (2019) and the Sod Poodles would retain it with a Sunday afternoon win (and a season split).

Kibbles & Bits

Max Schuemann "only" went 1-for-4 but extended his on-base streak to 16 games with sixth-inning single that fueled the RockHounds' three-run rally. Despite the "slump," Max is hitting .453 in the 16-gamer and exactly .500 (23-for-46) in the homestand.

The first five games of the series have been decided by a combined total of seven runs.
