Midland RockHounds News Release
In a fitting finish to a tremendous series, the RockHounds scored twice in the ninth inning for a 3-2 walk-off victory over the Amarillo Sod Poodles Sunday afternoon at Momentum Bank Ballpark.
The "fitting finish" included shortstop Edwin Diaz, who denied Amarillo four times in plays at the plate in the first three innings (see "Kibbles & Bits, below) and had the game-winning hit.
Amarillo third baseman Buddy Kennedy broke a 1-1 tie with a solo home run in the top of the eighth and the RockHounds were down to their final two outs after Kennedy (aligned in a no-doubles defense) snared a line drive down the line off Jonah Bride's bat to open the ninth.
JJ Schwarz drew a one-out walk and was replaced by pinch-runner Elvis Peralta. A wild pitch pushed Peralta into scoring position and Logan Davidson brought him home with a game-tying single to center. Davidson then went from first to third on Kyle McCann's single to center, putting runners at the corners, and Diaz (breaking a 1-for-17 stretch at the plate) sent a walk-off single to left bringing Davidson home with the game-winning run.
With the win, the RockHounds captured the "Oil Pan Cup," signifying the winner of the season series between the clubs (the 'Hounds went 13-11 against the Sod Poodles for the season).
The teams split this week's six-game series, one of the most closely contested in recent memory (also see "Kibbles & Bits").
Kibbles & Bits
Four times in the first three innings, Amarillo attempted to score, sending a base runner home from third. EACH of the four was denied at the plate with shortstop Edwin Diaz making all four plays. Three of the four came on direct throws to catcher Collin Theroux and the other when Diaz made a diving stop on a ball off the bat of Dominic Miroglio, then threw to third baseman Logan Davidson, who fired home to Theroux for the out.
