Austin Bruins News Release

In a rematch of last season s Central Division Finals, the Austin Bruins (13-4-0) knocked off the Bismarck Bobcats (10-4-1) in shutout fashion, winning 3-0 Friday at Riverside Arena in Austin. It was the first shutout win of the season for the Bruins, who are now 6-0 at home.

Although the rosters look much different from last year, there was no love lost between these two teams in the first period, with 38 combined penalty minutes. Ironically the only goal of the period was scored at even-strength, when the Bruins Brennan Sanford (Holt, MI) beat Bobcats goalie Aaron Nelson (Bismarck, ND) after a nice set-up pass from Brian Bachnak (Brownstown, MI). Shots in the first period were even at ten apiece.

Bismarck took three quick penalties early in the second period, giving Austin a lengthy 5-on-3 power-play. The Bobcats dodged the bullet, thanks to several big saves by Nelson to keep the score 1-0. Neither team generated many scoring chances in the second half the period, as the Bruins held onto their 1-0 lead into the second intermission.

After an apparent Lucas Kohls (Forest Lake, MN) goal midway through the third period was waived off, Trey Dodd (St. Louis, MO) notched his first career goal seconds later to give the Bruins a 2-0 lead. Kohls was rewarded in the final minutes, as his empty-netter put the game away to open the Bruins lead in the Central Division to five points over Bismarck. Justin Quale (Minnetonka, MN) earned his first career shutout, stopping 20 Bobcats shots.

The Bruins and Bobcats will go at it again Saturday night at 7:05pm at Riverside Arena. The game can be heard on 1480AM in Austin and viewed online at fasthockey.com.
