Johnstown Tomahawks News Release
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - The Johnstown Tomahawks had a dominating performance at the War Memorial on Friday night as Shane Bednard scored two goals to help the Tomahawks defeat the Springfield Jr. Blues 5-1.
Omar Mullan put the Tomahawks on the scoreboard first as he picked up Bednard's rebound to get his sixth goal of the season at 3:57 in the first. Matt Meier gave the Tomahawks a two goal lead at 16:17 to close out the first period at 2-0. Assisted by Josh Bowes and Tommy Hall, Meier scored from the top of the goal crease to give him his fifth goal of the season.
The Tomahawks built off the momentum from the first period with a goal at 0:41 by Shane Bednard from the high slot at the start of the second. The goal gave Bednard his fifth goal of the season and Mullan his first assist of the game. Bednard chased Springfield goalie Stefanos Lekkas from the net at 7:49 with his second goal of the game, a power play wrist shot unleashed from the high slot area. It was Bednard's sixth goal of the year, and Mitch Hall and Alex Jaeckle assisted.
Sandro Aeschlimann took over in net for Springfield, but could not stop Brandon Reinholz from increasing the Tomahawks' lead to 5-0 at 16:57 in the second period, when Reinholz chipped the puck into the net off a slap shot by Meier. It was the seventh goal of the season for Reinholz and the second point of the game for Meier.
The Jr. Blues finally got on the board at 0:47 into the third period as they capitalized on the power play with a goal by Mike Severson, giving him his fourth of the season. Patrick Curry and Joshua Lammon assisted on the play. The goal wasn't enough to give the Jr. Blues momentum as the Tomahawks took the game 5-1.
Alex Okicki only allowed one goal on 21 shots. Stefanos Lekkas was taken out of the goal at 7:49 in the second and was replaced by Sandro Aeschlimann who allowed one goal.
The Tomahawks take on the Jr. Blues Saturday night at the War Memorial at 7 p.m. for Military Appreciation Night, during which the Tomahawks will honor military personnel past and present.
