Iowa Cubs News Release

Nashville, TN - The Chicago Cubs selected the contract of RH Zach Putnam today and optioned RH Alex Burnett to the Iowa Cubs. The Cubs also placed Iowa RH Barret Loux on the disabled list with a sprained right ankle.

Putnam made his Chicago Cubs' debut today and retired the only batter he faced in the team's 8-3 victory over the Chicago White Sox. Putnam was added to the 40-man roster when the Cubs placed RH Kyuji Fujikawa on the 60-day disabled list to undergo "Tommy John" surgery. Putnam was 1-1 with a 3.26 ERA and converted four of five save opportunities in 17 games with Iowa. After allowing five runs in 2.1 innings in his first two outings, he allowed just two runs in 17 innings over his last 15 games before the promotion.

The Cubs claimed Burnett on waivers from the Baltimore Orioles on May 27 and he pitched one scoreless inning in his only appearance in Chicago before getting optioned today. Burnett had spent the first eight years of his pro career in the Twins organization after Minnesota drafted him in the 12th round of the 2005 draft. He was 4-4 with a 3.52 ERA in 67 games out of the Twins' bullpen last year. Since March 29, Burnett has been claimed on waivers twice and optioned six times. He is 1-1 with a 3.14 ERA (5ER/14.1IP) in 12 games this season between Buffalo (AAA), Norfolk (AAA), Baltimore, and Chicago.

Loux makes his second trip to the disabled list this season, effective May 28. He is 3-2 with a 6.29 ERA (24ER/34.1IP) in eight starts this year.

The Cubs play game three of a four-game series at Nashville tonight at 7:05. LH Brooks Raley (4-3, 4.53) will pitch for the Cubs against LH Chris Narveson on a major league rehab assignment for the Sounds. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 and streamed live at iowacubs.com with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 6:45.
