Providence Bruins News Release
Springfield, MA - The Providence Bruins fell to the Springfield Falcons this evening at the MassMutual Center to close out the preseason. Trent Whitfield scored the lone goal for the Providence.
In Springfield for their final preseason game, the P-Bruins were looking for redemption from a 3-1 loss to Bridgeport on Thursday at the New England Sports Center. However, the Falcons took an early lead just four minutes into the opening frame. Springfield's John Moore got the Falcons on the board when his shot from the blueline took a lucky deflection past Michael Hutchinson. The P-Bruins wouldn't be kept off the board for long however, as Whitfield backhanded the rebound of Lane MacDermid's shot past Curtis McEhinney. Chris Bourque also assisted on the play, his first point in a P-Bruins' uniform. The two teams exchanged scoring opportunities as the minutes ticked off the clock, but neither could find the back of the net and went into the first intermission tied at one.
Springfield got off to an even quicker start in the second and took at 2-1 lead at 1:37 off a redirection from Jonathan Audy-Marchessault. The Falcons and Audy-Marchessault added another at 13:20 after Matt Bartkowski was charged with a delay of game penalty. Despite the two-goal deficit, Providence kept on hammering McElhinney with shots, finishing the frame with eight shots to the Falcons' nine.
The third period was filled with penalties with both teams spending time in the sin bin. The Falcons capitalized on the momentum from a power play, scoring seconds after going back on full strength at 12:19. Providence had their own opportunities on the man advantage, including one 5-on-3 opportunity. Despite the two man-advantage, Providence struggled to find the net. However, back at even-strength, Providence pummeled McElhinney with shots. Despite the last resort efforts, the P-Bruins couldn't find the back of the net and the Falcons held on for the 4-1 win.
McElhinney earned the win, blocking 23 of 24 Providence attempts, while Hutchinson suffered the loss, stopping 25 shots.
The P-Bruins' Opening Night is on Friday, October 12th. The club faces the Manchester Monarchs at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in a 7:05 p.m. matchup. The P-Bruins' complete season schedule can be found on www.providencebruins.com .
