Providence Bruins News Release
Providence, RI - The Springfield Falcons defeated the Providence Bruins 2-1 at the Dunkin Donuts Center in their first of three games this weekend.
In the opening period, both teams had chances early. Jeremy Smith allowed rebounds on multiple occasions, but was able to make the necessary ensuing saves. Anton Forsberg was tested as well, as Providence had multiple chances in the slot. In his first game back from an injury, Chris Casto forced a turnover just inside the blue line, then fed Justin Florek. Matt Lindblad received a cross-ice pass from Florek and wristed it past Forsberg from the far side of the zone to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead at 11:33. It was Lindblad's 8th goal of the season.
Shortly after the game's first lamp-lighter, Josh Anderson created a breakaway chance for himself, but Smith stood tall. Steve Eminger committed a hooking minor later in the stanza, but the Bruins were able to kill off the chance. The teams headed into their respective dressing rooms with the home team leading by the game's only goal.
The Bruins took three shots in the first 0:17 of the second period, with Rob Flick creating a chance in front, but it was the Falcons who would score the next goal.
Marko Dano scored the game-tying goal at 13:06 on a rebound, with Smith laid out to try to prevent it. Michael Chaput got the primary assist, while Josh Anderson added the second helper on Dano's 8th goal of the season.
Springfield had another chance right after the goal, and took the lead only a few minutes later. Providence allowed its first power play goal of 2015 on another rebound in front. Adam Cracknell score the go-ahead strike at 17:28, notching his first point in a Falcons uniform. Luke Adam and Kerby Rychell got the assists on the play.
Rob Flick registered an interference major and a game misconduct at 18:52 for a hit he laid on Dano, which gave Springfield a power play that carried over into the third period, leading 2-1.
The P-Bruins were up a skater on two separate occasions in the third, but could not score either time. Just more than halfway through the period, their lone power play began (at 10:19), but the Falcons finished off a perfect 3-for-3 penalty killing effort. (Providence was 2-for-3 in the same category.) After pulling Smith, the Bruins had 6-on-5 for more than a minute, but Forsberg and the visiting team held on for the win.
In the defeat, Smith made 31 saves on 33 Falcons shots. Forsberg had 29 stops on 30 attempts in the win.
The Bruins' next contest is on Saturday night in Worcester against the Sharks at 7:00pm.
PROVIDENCE SCORING:
#9 Matt Lindblad (#18 Florek, #6 Casto)
PROVIDENCE GOALTENDING:
#30 Jeremy Smith (31 saves on 33 shots)
