Sharks Score Three Power Play Goals in 6-3 Win over Senators

Worcester, MA - The Worcester Sharks (15-14-3-2, 35pts) kicked off their five game home stand with an exciting 6-3 win over the visiting Binghamton Senators (15-16-3-1, 34pts) in front of 2,667 fans at the DCU on Friday evening. The Sharks host the Bruins on Saturday at 7pm with a John Buccigross Overtime Challenge Bobblehead and appearance presented by Southbridge Savings Bank.

The Sharks scored three power play goals for the first time this season as Worcester received multipoint games from Willie Coetzee (1-3-4), Konrad Abeltshauser (1-2-3), Dylan Demelo (0-2-2), Chris Tierney (1-1-2), and Daniil Tarasov (1-1-2). Ryan Carpenter netted the game winner and Jeremy Langlois knotted his team leading 10th goal of the season while Troy Grosenick made 26 saves for his 11th win of the season.

Willie Coetzee picked up three points (1-2-3) in the first period as Worcester charged out to a 3-1 lead through 20 minutes. Coetzee (3rd) gave the Sharks a 1-0 lead with a power play score at 2:20 after his shot from the left circle beat goaltender Andrew Hammond. Chris Tierney (4th) finished off a beautiful rush with a quick stick handle and flick of the wrists on top of the crease at 8:37 to give Worcester a 2-0 edge. The Senators struck back just 18 seconds later after a turnover behind the Worcester net led to David Dziurzynski (4th) firing a quick shot from five feet past Troy Grosenick at 8:53. Worcester struck again on the power play as Daniil Tarasov (7th) fired a cross ice pass from Willie Coetzee past Andrew Hammond at 11:15 to put the Sharks ahead 3-1. Binghamton held a 15-11 shot advantage through 20 minutes but the Sharks held a 3-1 lead.

Tough guy Darren Kramer (1st) scored his first goal of the season in his 34th game after the Sharks turned the puck over at their blue line and Max McCormik sent the puck towards the Sharks net and Kramer was able to tip it past Grosenick at 3:07. The Sharks got their two goal lead back at 10:45 as Ryan Carpenter (5th) broke a 22 game goalless drought with a shot from the right circle on the rush to put the Sharks ahead 4-2. Matt Puempel (9th) tipped a Shane Price shot past Grosenick on the power play at 18:31 to get the Senators back to a single score. Worcester held a 4-3 advantage through 40 minutes and had a 26-20 shot advantage through 40 minutes.

Worcester would pad their lead with a pair of goals in the third period as Konrad Abeltshauser (3rd) scored an insurance goal at 12:49 and Jeremy Langlois (10th scored on the power play at 18:47 with an easy tap in from the goal line to finish the scoring for the night. Worcester outshot Binghamton 10-9 in the third period in the 6-3 victory.

The Sharks overall record improves to 15-14-3-2, 35pts, and 9-6-2-1, 21pts at the DCU Center.

Petter Emanuelsson (inj), Eriah Hayes (inj), Micheal Haley (ill), and Nick Jones did not dress for Worcester.... Matt Tennyson, Freddie Hamilton, and Melker Karlsson are still with the SJ Sharks... Chris Tierney now has a four game point streak (3-2-5) and has scored in three straight games...Worcester has points in eight of their last ten games (5-2-1-2)....before the game Wachusett defeated Auburn 4-0 in high school hockey action.

On Saturday, the Sharks host the Providence Bruins at 7pm with the first 3,000 fans receiving a John Buccigross Overtime Challenge bobblehead doll presented by Southbridge Savings Bank. "Bucci" will sign autographs from 6-8pm and make sure to arrive early for the 6th annual High School Hockey Showdown featuring the Shrewsbury Colonials vs. the Algonquin Tomahawks. Doors open at 2pm for the girls' varsity game at 2:10pm and the boys' game at 4pm. One ticket is good for all three games!
