Sound Tigers Take Bite out of Pirates

Portland, Me.- The Portland Pirates (20-16-1-0) fell to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers (17-14-3-1) by a score of 4-1 on Friday night at the Cross Insurance Arena. It was the last in a five-game home stand for the Pirates, and their first loss after a winning streak that lasted five games starting on December 31, 2014.

The first period had no scoring, despite three power play opportunities for the Pirates. The Sound Tigers put up their first goal in the second period when Colton Gillies got one past Mike McKenna (15-13-1) at 6:05, assisted by Johan Sundstrom and John Persson. They made the score 2-0 a little over a minute later at 7:43 when Harry Zolnierczyk scored, assisted by Jesse Graham and Cory Conacher. The Pirates answered to make it a one-goal game at 9:46 with a goal from Jordan Martinook, assisted by Brendan Shinnimin.

The Sound Tigers added to their tally midway through the third period with a 10:12 goal from Alan Quine, assisted by Conacher and Graham. They locked it up with an empty netter from Persson and assisted by Colin MacDonald at 19:03.

Portland goalie McKenna allowed his first goals in three games, blocking 30 of 33 Sound Tiger shots on the night. Kevin Poulin was Bridgeport's netminder, blocking 34 of 35 shots from the Pirates.

The Pirates hit the road for four games, traveling first to Providence to take on the Bruins at the Dunkin Donuts Center at 3:05 p.m. on Sunday, January 11. From there, they will head to St. John's, Newfoundland, to take on the IceCaps for three games. They will play on Wednesday, January 14, Friday the 16th, and Saturday the 17th. All games will be at 6:00 p.m. The Pirates will return to the Cross Insurance Arena on Wednesday, January 21 to take on the Worcester Sharks at 7 p.m. For tickets and more information, call 207-PIRATES.
