Spokane Chiefs News Release
Spokane, Wash. - Over 5,000 stuffed animals flew onto the ice on as the Spokane Chiefs defeated the division rival Seattle Thunderbirds, 3-2 in overtime on Saturday night at Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena.
German forward Yannick Proske triggered the 5,175 toy avalanche with his sixth goal of the season and third in four games, ripping the puck inside the far post to make it 1-0 at 18:05 of the first period.
After clearing the ice, the teams retired to the dressing room for an intermission, playing the final 1:55 of the first on a clean sheet. The Thunderbirds tied it up in the second but Spokane struck again at 3:22 of the third as Cordel Larson deposited a rebound opportunity into the open net on a power play.
Seattle once again tied it up, this time as young defenseman Kevin Korchinski sniped home his first career WHL goal with 7:32 left in regulation.
The overtime frame short and sweet for the hosting Chiefs as Proske, Blake Swetlikoff and Graham Sward partnered up for a beautiful tic-tac-toe play, finished by Sward to earn the victory.
