Privett and Mazzola Lead Goldeyes to Series Win

July 29, 2012 - American Association (AA)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

It's baseball's perfect combination: Pitching, defense and three-run homers. On a day when the Winnipeg Goldeyes made two errors, exceptional pitching and a big three-run homer were enough.

Sunday afternoon in front of a crowd of 5,543 at Shaw Park, Josh Mazzola provided the three-run shot plus a two-run blast, while Todd Privett and Brian Beuning did the job on the mound, as the Goldeyes beat the Sioux Falls Fighting Pheasants 7-3.

With the win, the Goldeyes won the three-game series with Sioux Falls, improved to 39-28 and remained in second place in the American Association's North Division.

"Todd Privett was phenomenal today," said Goldeyes manager Rick Forney. "I don't know what it is, but we struggle to get started sometimes. We made a couple of errors early and probably took an inning off Todd's outing today, but he was awesome.

"He's a good young pitcher (Privett, from Salt Lake City, is 26) who pitches to both sides of the plate and he has a sneaky fastball. He also gets out there and competes and I like that."

Sioux Falls started quickly against the Fish, scoring twice in the top of the first inning, but Winnipeg answered with four in the bottom of the first. Price Kendall walked, Jon Weber walked and with two out Luis Alen Singled home Kendall.

Then, with Alen on first and Weber on third, Mazzola hit a three-run blast over the leftfield wall.

Sioux Falls scored a run in the second to make it 4-3 and then, in the fourth, Chris Roberson hit a solo homer to give the Goldeyes a two-run lead.

In the fifth, the Goldeyes made it 7-3 when Yurendell de Caster walked and Mazzola hit his second homer of the game, a two-run shot over the left-centerfield wall that bounced into the Red River.

"Mazzola had a great day today," said Forney. "They threw two pitches right into his swing path today. He hits the ball hard. He doesn't hit the big majestic home runs, he hits those line drives with a lot of backspin that just jump out of the park. He's a strong kid and he's been producing a lot of runs for us. He's swinging the bat real well right now."

Mazzola had a tremendous game, going three-for-four with two homers (his ninth and 10th of the season), a double, two runs scored and five driven in. He also made a sensational catch in right field in the ninth inning.

Roberson, meanwhile, went two-for-four with a solo homer (his 10th of the year) and a couple of terrific defensive plays in centerfield.

Privett (5-4, 3.53 ERA -- 4-2 with a 2.96 ERA as a member of the Goldeyes) went 6.2 innings and got the win for the Fish while Mitchell Clegg (5-5, 5.65 ERA) suffered the loss for the Pheasants. Beuning pitched 2.1 innings to finish the game, allowed no runs on only one hit and lowered his earned run average to 0.63.

The Goldeyes have a travel day on Monday. On Tuesday the Fish will face the T-Bones in Kansas City at 7 p.m. The game can be heard live on TSN 1290 with Paul Edmonds calling the play-by-play.
