WHL Moose Jaw Warriors

Preview: Warriors Hit Road to Alberta for Two Games

October 5, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Moose Jaw Warriors News Release

Coming off a big bounce back week, the Moose Jaw Warriors are getting set for their first road trip of the season.

The Warriors will travel into Lethbridge and Medicine Hat for games on Friday and Saturday.

With three wins last week, the Warriors feel like the team is finding its footing.

"Obviously it helps getting the guys back in the lineup that we did, but I can also say that I though the players that have been here right from training camp all the way through have played better," Warriors head coach Mark O'Leary said.

"They're practicing the right way, they're working on the right things and it just sometimes takes a bit of time to get your game where it needs to be."

Warriors goalie Jackson Unger settled in last week, backstopping Moose Jaw to the three wins and making 30-plus saves in all three games.

"He's been our most consistent player for sure," O'Leary said. "It's not only the number of saves, but when they're made within the game and certainly within the period, those are big confidence boosters to the players."

Unger said he felt like he found his groove.

"I built a standard for myself and just going to go from there and build on those good games," he said.

"It was just the mindset and obviously helped with the players playing a good game in front of you, but I just found my mental game and stayed consistent."

The Warriors will be focused on building off last week's success as they prepare to take on the Hurricanes and Tigers for the first time this season over the weekend.

Both teams are off to solid starts to the year, Lethbridge sits at 3-1-0-0 through four games, while Medicine Hat leads the Eastern Conference with a 3-1-1-0 record.

O'Leary said they will see two very different styles of play in the two games.

"With Lethbridge, we know them well, their style of play and a new coach, so I'm sure there's some different wrinkles there, but just in terms of their personnel, they make things real hard to get to the net and we're going to have to manage pucks properly to get it there," he said.

"With Medicine Hat, faster team, certainly dangerous off the rush, so our tracking details are going to be real important, but it's two real tough tests for us and we're looking forward to it."

The Warriors and Hurricanes battle on Friday night at 7 p.m. and then Moose Jaw travels into Medicine Hat on Saturday at 7 p.m.

You can catch all the action this weekend on WHL Live and Country 100, starting with the Pre-Game Show at 6:40 p.m.
