Portland Winterhawks News Release
Portland, Ore. - The Portland Winterhawks Hockey Club today announced its leadership group for the 2023-24 season, headlined by captain Gabe Klassen and alternate captains Kyle Chyzowski and Jack O'Brien. Each player will wear a corresponding letter on his jersey for all games this season, with a third "A" being rotated to different players throughout the season.
"We are excited to have a veteran leadership group back this year. Gabe, Jack and Kyle represent everything we believe is important to be a captain in our organization," said Winterhawks Head Coach and General Manager Mike Johnston. "And as I mentioned to the team, I am looking forward to other leaders emerging from the dressing room as the season progresses."
Klassen, 20, enters his second season as Portland's captain and his third wearing a letter among the club's leadership group. The Prince Albert, Sask. native led the Hawks on and off the ice during his first year as captain, notching a team-high 69 points in 64 games and earning co-MVP honors at Portland's end-of-season awards alongside Luca Cagnoni. Klassen boasts 166 points in 184 career games as he enters his final WHL campaign.
Chyzowski, 19, impressively earned alternate captain honors last season as an 18-year-old, serving as a valuable voice in the locker room in just his second full WHL season. Posting a career-high-tying 35 points in 54 games, the Surrey, B.C. native came up clutch with a pair of overtime winners last season while thriving in all situations. Chyzowski has recorded 80 points in 145 career games as he kicks off the 2023-24 season.
O'Brien, 20, also returns as an alternate captain after sporting an "A" during the 2022-23 campaign. The Denver, Colo. native bagged a career-best 59 points in 66 regular-season games last year before scoring at a point-per-game clip with nine points in nine games during the playoffs. Approaching the 200-game milestone, O'Brien has recorded 142 points in 197 career contests through the start of his fifth season in the Rose City.
Congratulations, Gabe, Kyle and Jack!
