Atlanta Gladiators News Release
The Gladiators opened a two goal lead once again in the series, but once again South Carolina was able to come back to force overtime. The extra-time would not be as kind to Gwinnett as it has been in the two previous games, as Nikita Kashirsky put home the game winner at the 2:48 mark in the extra frame.
As has been the trend in this series, the Gladiators got the scoring started early. Josh Godfrey took a slashing infraction on a partial break-away opportunity against Brain Kaufman. After some good work with the puck in the right wing corner, Brad Schell was able to work the puck back to Scott Mifsud. Mifsud walked to the top of the slot and blasted a slap shot off the crossbar and into the net.
Just over 10 minutes later, at the 14:41 mark, the Gladiators would strike again after a beautiful display of passing. Matt Caruana brought the puck into the zone on the left wing boards and moved it up to Adam Berti. Berti was able to find Tom Zanoski across the slot, and Zanoski moved it immediately back to Caruana. Caruana took the pass and tucked it home inside the right post giving the Gladiators a 2-0 lead.
South Carolina struck back 2 minutes and 26 seconds later on a goal by Dain Prewitt. A delayed penalty being called against the Gladiators allowed for a mad scramble in front of the net. After a few players getting chances, Prewitt controlled a bouncing puck and slammed it home cutting the lead to 2-1.
The score would remain 2-1 until the 17:32 mark of the second period, when Jake Hauswirth tipped a long wrister from Matt Scherer between the pads of Danny Taylor. The tied score would not last long as Matt Caruana struck back just 13 seconds later, getting a good feed from Adam Berti to put the puck in the back of the net.
That 3-2 score would last until the 10 minute mark of the third period. The Stingrays were able to catch Gwinnett flat-footed on a break out, and Joe Finley dialed a slap-shot from the slot and blasted a puck through the pads of goaltender Danny Taylor.
For the third straight game, the Gladiators and Stingrays would go to overtime. Gwinnett has been good in extra-time this season, but the Stingrays would get the better of Gwinnett in this one. Nikita Kashirsky was able to get a full head of steam coming through the neutral zone, and slipped a puck past Taylor just before crashing into the net.
The Gladiators fall to 3-1-1-0 on the year, South Carolina improves to 2-1-1-1.
