Chiefs fall to Jackals

Johnstown, PA - The Johnstown Chiefs lost a hard fought battle to the Elmira Jackals 2-1 in overtime on Saturday night at the UPMC Health Plan Ice Rink at the Cambria County War Memorial Arena.

With the loss Johnstown's record fell to 0-3-1

After playing in Elmira Friday night, things got off to a slow start, but play picked up as the Chiefs posted 12 shots and Elmira posted 15. At either end of the ice the goaltenders, Kris Mayotte for Johnstown, Chris Holt for Elmira, played hard as the game was scoreless after 20 minutes. Both teams failed to capitalize on two power plays apiece. Erik Felde and David Schulz were both penalized on the Chiefs side for Holding and hooking respectively.

The second period was more of the same, both goaltenders made key saves,and when the second period ended, with the score still tied at zero, the stage was set for a dramatic third period. The Chiefs failed to capitalize on thee more power plays, but their penalty kill kept the Chiefs in the game, successfully shutting down an Elmira power play attempt, from an interference minor for Erik Felde, his second penalty of the game.

Connor Shields finally broke the tie at 12:51 of the third period, scoring his first professional goal, assisted by Mike Bartlett. The Chiefs successfully killed two penalties following their goal, holding their lead until the Jackals' goalie Holt left his cage, and Ben Wright knocked in his first of the season, tying the game with 27 seconds left on the clock. Chanse Fitzpatrick notched the game winner at 3:03 in Overtime, his fourth of the season.

Kris Mayotte finished the night with 39 saves on 41 shots while the chiefs power play went 0/5 and the penalty kill was 6/6.

Mark your calendars next home game is Wednesday, November 11 at 7:35 against the Redding Royals. Promotion: The Chiefs are hosting a special post-Veterans Day Parade celebration, the Chiefs will wear special camouflage jerseys to be auctioned off after the game. Veterans, and active military personnel will be admitted to the game for only $5.
