
Power win streak reaches nine

Charleston, WV (August 17, 2009) - The West Virginia Power used a 12-hit attack and scored nine times on Monday night at Appalachian Power Park to extend their season best winning streak to nine games with a 9-4 victory over the Asheville Tourists.
The Power plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early lead. Greg Picart, Starling Marte and Tony Sanchez began the inning with base hits. Sanchez's single scored Picart and Sanchez came in on Quincy Latimore's double off the wall in left field. The Tourists tied the game moments later in the top of the second inning on Mike Zuanich's two-run homer off Brian Leach.
West Virginia sent all nine batters to the plate in the fourth inning and scored four times on three hits to snap a 2-2 tie. Calvin Anderson started the inning with a solo homer, his 11th of the season. A wild pitch scored Bobby Spain and Marte singled in the final two runs. A three run fifth inning helped West Virginia pull away. Austin McClune's double scored the first run and Marte's third single of the contest plated West Virginia's final two runs. The Tourists used solo homers to plate their final two runs. Kiel Roling homered in the fifth and Jimmy Cesario went deep in the eighth.
Brian Leach (5-2) allowed three runs on four hits over six strong innings and fanned five in a winning effort. Diego Moreno (5) tossed the final three innings and allowed just a run on two hits with four strikeouts to get the save. Tyler Trice (4-4) was tagged for seven runs on seven hits over two innings of relief and was suffered the loss.
West Virginia improved to 55-61 overall, and 28-18 in the second half after the victory, while the Tourists fell to 50-61 overall and 30-18 in the second half after the loss. Tony Sanchez's RBI single in the first inning extended his hitting streak to seven games and he's knocked in at least one run in each of his last six games. Starling Marte paced the Power with a three hit performance and knocked in four runs, while Greg Picart, Calvin Anderson and Danny Bomback turned in two hits a piece. The victory for West Virginia was their first at home since July 28th against the Charleston Riverdogs.
West Virginia will begin continue the four game series with the Asheville Tourists at Appalachian Power Park on Tuesday night. The Power will start right hander Quinton Miller (2-3, 5.59) and the Tourists will counter with right hander Juan Nicasio (7-1, 1.68). The first pitch will be delivered at 7:05 PM.
