Augusta GreenJackets News Release

Hagerstown, MD - Juan Perez doubled twice in the first three innings to drive in four runs and help the Augusta GreenJackets build a big lead en route to a ¬7-5 win over the Hagerstown Suns in the finale of a four-game set from Municipal Stadium Monday night.

After three straight walks by Hagerstown starter Paul Demny, Perez ripped a bases-clearing double to left to put the GreenJackets up three runs in the first. It was only the third time in the road trip that Augusta scored first.

In the third inning, Perez's second double - a drive high off the 30-foot wall in left-center - knocked in a fourth run for Augusta. Johnny Monell followed with his second home run of the series to put the GreenJackets up by six after two and a half innings.

Hagerstown slammed the door on the Jackets with 3.1 scoreless innings from reliever Robinson Fabian, who pitched against the Jackets twice while a member of the Asheville Tourists earlier this season. The Suns also climbed back into the game with two runs on three hits and two Augusta errors in a sloppy third inning.

The Suns had the chance to tie or lead the game in the seventh, as Justin Fitzgerald walked the bases full in his return from the disabled list before hitting Tyler Moore to cut the lead to three. Charlie Fermaint singled in a run and the lead shrunk to two with the bases still loaded. Ryan Verdugo got the last two outs of the inning, stranding the bases full and ending the threat.

James Simmons gave Augusta some more breathing room with a two-out solo home run in the ninth inning to give the Jackets a 7-4 lead. Hagerstown wasn't finished, adding a run in the ninth on a Stephen Souza RBI single with two outs. Edwin Quirarte got pinch hitter Chris Curran to bounce out to the mound to end the game and preserve the GreenJackets win.

Eric Surkamp (9-5) struck out nine, one off his career-high, in six innings of work. He allowed two runs, one earned, on eight hits with two walks in his third straight win. Demny (2-10) allowed six runs in 2.2 innings on just three hits with five walks and four strikeouts. Quirarte earned his eighth save of the season and second of the series. GreenJackets relievers saved all five wins on the road trip. With the win, the GreenJackets take three of four from the Suns, end the eight-game road trip with a 5-3 record and finish the Northern Division portion of their schedule with a 16-8 record.
