Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, NC - Nevin Griffith and pair of relievers mowed through the Lexington offense on Monday night at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium, as Kannapolis recorded a 6-0 win over the Legends.
The shutout was the 15th of the season for the Intimidators pitching staff, five more than any other South Atlantic League club, and the fourth in five games against Lexington. Kannapolis shut out the Legends in three straight games when the sides first met in early April.
Griffith (3-4) went most of the way, allowing just three hits in six innings on the slab. The right-hander gave up two hits in the first, but the Legends offense managed only one knock through the final eight innings.
Leroy Hunt worked two scoreless frames, despite walking three batters in that stretch. Ryan Braun worked a perfect ninth, striking out two, to close out the win.
Kannapolis took an early lead against Legends starter Kyle Greenwalt (7-12) with three first inning runs. The Intimidators used four hits and an error to plate the three, with RBIs going to Brandon Short, Jon Gilmore and Kyle Shelton.
But from that point on, Greenwalt dominated. The 20-year-old got Josh Phegley to ground into a double play to end the first and did not allow another baserunner through his time on the hill. Greenwalt struck out a season-high nine in five innings, as the Lexington staff went on to combine fore 14 strikeouts in the game.
The Intimidators added three runs late to erase any doubt. Phegley singled in a run in the seventh, before Short and Jared Mitchell posted RBIs in the eighth to put it away.
