Power use six-run first inning to beat Drive

Charleston, WV (August 24, 2009) - The West Virginia Power plated all six of their runs in the bottom of the first inning with two outs on Monday night at Appalachian Power Park and secured a series split as they defeated the Greenville Drive 12-6.

Bobby Spain turned in the first two-out hit with a single to right field which scored the first two runs of the inning. Danny Bomback followed with an RBI double before Josue Peley singled in two more runs and Peley scored the final run of the inning on Starling Marte's base hit. West Virginia added two more in the second inning. Quincy Latimore started the inning with a double and scored on Calvin Anderson's groundout before Kyle Morgan belted a solo homer, his sixth of the season. Marte was hit by a pitch with one out in the third, and he scored when Latimore reached on Casey Kelly's throwing error.

The Drive got their first run in the top of the fifth inning when Oscar Tejada's sacrifice fly brought Ryan Dent home. Ryan Lavarnway reached on Adenson Chourio's error in the seventh inning, which allowed Tejada and Shannon Wilkerson to score. West Virginia added three more insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Bomback reached on Dent's throwing error, allowing Anderson to score and Peley doubled in the final two runs. Greenville did not go down quietly, as they scored three times in the top of the ninth. Will Middlebrooks doubled in the first run and Alex Hassan's two-bagger brought in the final two.

Noah Krol (5-0) allowed no runs on two hits over an inning and two-thirds of relief to score the victory. Stolmy Pimentel (9-7) was tagged for eight runs on seven hits over two innings of work and suffered the loss. Quinton Miller started the game for West Virginia and allowed just a run on three hits over four and a third, but was taken out of the game because of his pitch count.

West Virginia improved to 58-65 overall, and 31-22 in the second half after the victory, while the Drive fell to 65-58 overall and 27-29 in the second half after the loss. Calvin Anderson's eighth inning single extended his hitting streak to seven games. Starling Marte has now reached safely in eleven straight games and Danny Bomback extended his on base streak to nine games. Marte, Bomback and Peley paced the Power with two hits a piece and Peley drove in four of West Virginia's 12 runs.

West Virginia will begin a four game series with the Bowling Green Hot Rods at Bowling Green Ballpark on Tuesday night. The Power will start right hander Brett Lorin (0-1, 2.45) and the Hot Rods will counter with right hander Chris Andujar (10-3, 2.85). The first pitch will be delivered at 7:35 PM.
