Five 10th-inning runs down Jackets

Augusta, GA - A costly 10th inning error led to five runs for the Charleston RiverDogs, taking two of three from the Augusta GreenJackets with a 7-2, 10-inning victory from Lake Olmstead Stadium on Monday night.
With one out and the bases loaded in the top of the 10th, Tommy Baldridge's bouncer to second was thrown into left field by Juan Perez while attempting to hook up with Vladimir Frias on the double play. Two runs scored in an inning that went downhill soon after. Mitch Abeita's single plated two more while Jose Pirela knocked in another for good measure to nail the final coffin in the GreenJackets hopes for victory on Monday.
Breathing their last breaths in the ninth, the GreenJackets mounted a two-out rally to come from a run down. Andy D'Alessio sliced a double down the left field line and pinch runner Mike Loberg scored from second on Charlie Culberson's single to give Augusta new life, although short-lived.
Charleston led 2-0 early on with an Abraham Almonte RBI single in the third and Addison Maruszak scoring on a wild pitch in the fourth, one of four thrown by Eric Surkamp. Surkamp equaled his career-high with ten strikeouts, but was erratic with the wild pitches combining with four walks in his six innings. He yielded both runs on four hits.
The GreenJackets struck back in the bottom of the fourth when Jose Pirela threw wide of first on an Andy D'Alessio groundball, scoring Francisco Peguero on the throwing error to cut the deficit in half.
Charleston starter Trent Lare was solid against Surkamp, striking out eight in 7.2 innings and allowing just one unearned runs on four hits and a walk. The late rally cost Lare his third win as a RiverDog this season.
Chuck Nolte lost the lead in the ninth for Charleston, but held on for the win. Nolte (4-2) tossed 2.1 innings of one-run baseball out of the âpen for the RiverDogs, allowing two hits and a walk with two strikeouts. Edwin Quirarte was the victim of bad luck in the 10th, allowing five runs - two earned - on five hits in two innings to take the loss.
