Charleston Dirty Birds News Release

The West Virginia Power beat the Lakewood BlueClaws 4-3 in seven innings on Thursday night at Appalachian Power Park. The game was halted in the bottom of the seventh inning due to rain and never resumed.

West Virginia staked starter Colton Cain to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Drew Maggi led off with a double and scored one out later on a triple by Dan Grovatt. Justin Howard followed with a ground out that scored Grovatt. With two outs, Mel Rojas Jr. walked, stole second, and scored on a base hit by Elias Diaz.

The BlueClaws dented the Power lead with a run in the top of the third inning on a triple and a ground out. Lakewood tacked on another run in the fourth to cut the West Virginia lead down to 3-2, but the Power countered in the bottom of the inning on back-to-back singles and a throwing error charged to BlueClaw starter Lisalberto Bonilla to build a 4-2 advantage.

In the sixth, Lakewood scored its final run on a hit batter and a two-out single by Anthony Hewitt.

The game was sent to a rain delay in the bottom of the seventh inning with one out. After an hour and two minutes, the game was called and the Power picked up the rain-shortened victory.

Cain (5-5) pitched six innings, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out six. Bonilla (0-2), making his second start after 13 relief appearances, took the loss for Lakewood. Porfirio Lopez pitched a scoreless inning to earn his first save as a member of the Power bullpen.

The Power and the Blueclaws will be back in action tomorrow evening with a 7:05 p.m. start. Zack Von Rosenberg will take the bump for West Virginia against Lakewood righty David Buchanan. The Friday night game will be followed with a fireworks display.

POWER RECORD: 33-33
