Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
Hagerstown, MD (August 1, 2009) - The West Virginia Power took advantage of four Hagerstown errors on Saturday night at Municipal Stadium and received great pitching performances from Brett Lorin, Diego Moreno and Casey Erickson who combined to toss a five hitter as the Power defeated the Hagerstown Suns 2-1 in ten innings.
Lorin, one of the four players sent to the Pirates from Seattle in the Jack Wilson trade tossed six sensational innings in his Power debut. The six foot, seven inch tall right hander allowed a run on just four hits with a free pass and three strikeouts. West Virginia scored their first run in the top of the first inning. Starling Marte started the game with a walk and scored on Tony Sanchez's double down the left field line.
Hagerstown scored their lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning. With runners on second and third and one out, Steve Lombardozzi hit a fly ball to left field, deep enough to score the tying run. On the play, Robbie Grossman's throw from left field was cut off by Jeremy Farrell at third who threw out Chris Curran at second base. The Power scored the eventual game winner in the top of the tenth. Starling Marte belted a one out single and stole second base. Grossman then hit a groundball to Hagerstown shortstop Steven Souza who couldn't handle the ball as it hit off his left arm and went into center field, allowing Marte to score.
Moreno (1-2) pitched himself out of trouble a couple of times, and tossed three scoreless innings of relief with three strikeouts to secure the victory. Casey Erickson (1) pitched a perfect tenth inning to snag his first save of the season. Chris Rivera (0-1) allowed the unearned run in the tenth inning and was tagged with the loss.
West Virginia improved to 46-57 overall, and 19-14 in the second half after the victory, while the Suns fell to 44-58 overall and 13-22 in the second half after the loss. Tony Sanchez paced the Power with a 2-for-4 performance. Starling Marte has now hit safely in 17 straight games and has reached in all 28 games with the Power. His 28 game on base streak is tied for the longest on the team. Austin McClune singled in his final at bat to extend his hitting streak to 11 games.
West Virginia will finish the four game series against the Hagerstown Suns with a double header at Municipal Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Power will start right hander Hunter Strickland (1-0, 0.00) in game one and the Suns will counter with right hander Juan Jaime (0-0, 2.25). The first pitch will be delivered at 1:05 PM.
