Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
LAKEWOOD, NJ - Down 4-3 in the tenth, Troy Hanzawa doubled, Korby Mintken singled, as well as Jim Murphy and the Lakewood BlueClaws scored two runs, in a come-from-behind win against the Hickory Crawdads 5-4. The win ended the BlueClaws season-high three-game losing streak.
In a battle between two young top prospects, starters Wilmer Font, for the Crawdads (19-15) and Trevor May, for the BlueClaws (19-16) battled deep into the ballgame. Both May and Font had their troubles in the first inning, but settled down to pitch well.
May's struggles came first as he walked the leadoff man Cody Podraza and then allowed an RBI-double to Erik Morrison to make it a 1-0 game. That sequence occurred in the 2-1 loss in Friday as well. After the double, Morrison then came home on a single by Doug Hogan to take a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the first it was Font's turn to struggle. He allowed a leadoff walk to Harold Garcia who then scored on a double by Travis d'Arnaud to make it 2-1. Jim Murphy was the next hitter and flew out to deep left field, but d'Arnaud advanced to third. After a walk to Jeremy Hamilton, Font threw a wild pitch, allowing the run to score, tying the game at two.
Both pitchers then settled down, Font pitched five-innings, allowed two runs and struck out eight. May pitched seven innings and allowed another run in the fourth, to make the total three, while striking out nine. This is the first time May has pitched in the seventh inning all season.
Down 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth, Anthony Gose reached on an error and stole second base. The steal was his 58th, putting him just one away from the BlueClaws single-season record. Gose from second went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of d'Arnaud, tying the game at three.
In the tenth inning, after another shutout performance by BJ Rosenberg, Jordan Ellis (2-2) pitched and allowed a run, making it a 4-3 ballgame before the BlueClaws came back to win the ballgame.
The win was the eighth time this season that the BlueClaws have won in their final at-bats while trailing to start the inning.
Closer Matt Nevarez (1-3) took the loss, as he lasted just 1/3 of an inning and allowed two runs. Fabio Castillo allowed the single to Murphy.
The BlueClaws and the Crawdads will continue with game three of the series on Sunday at 5:05 pm. The BlueClaws will send Justin De Fratus (5-3) to the mound and he will be opposed by talented lefty Martin Perez (5-5).
