Hickory Crawdads News Release
LAKEWOOD, N.J. - The Lakewood BlueClaws tallied twice in the bottom of the 10th inning to take a 5-4 come-from-behind win in walk-off fashion against the Hickory Crawdads, before 8,332 fans at FirstEnergy Park on Saturday night.
For the second straight game, the Crawdads (19-15, 52-51) took a first-inning lead against Lakewood, this time with two runs against RHP Trevor May. CF Cody Podraza led off the frame with a walk and quickly advanced to third base on a stolen bag and throwing error charged to C Travis d'Arnaud. With one away later in the inning, 1B Erik Morrison came through with an RBI double to bring in Podraza, then came home himself on an RBI single by C Doug Hogan, putting Hickory ahead, 2-0, through half a stanza.
Lakewood (19-16, 61-42), though, battled right back in the bottom of the first against RHP Wilmer Font. 2B Harold Garcia drew a walk to start the inning and scored later in the frame on a one-out RBI double by d'Arnaud. d'Arnaud then advanced to third on a fly ball out to left field before scoring on a wild pitch to tie the game, 2-2.
The Crawdads moved back in front with a run in the top of the fourth inning. DH Eric Fry started the frame with a ground-rule double to left field and took third on a foul out. Fry then came home the final ninety feet on a sacrifice fly to left field by LF Cristian Santana, making it 3-2.
Font kept dealing on the mound, striking out the side in the fourth and navigating through the fifth in scoreless fashion, racking up a season-high eight strikeouts in his start before being relieved by RHP Jake Brigham to start the sixth. Brigham, who was just activated from the disabled list on Friday, had an unearned run score against him in the sixth, tying the game at 3-3, but then dealt a three-up, three-down seventh inning in his second frame of work.
LHP Yoon-Hee Nam and Tyler Tufts combined to keep the 3-3 score intact through the remainder of regulation, as the game headed to extra innings. Hickory again pulled ahead in the top of the 10th, when RF Jared Bolden lofted a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to left field, scoring SS Leury Garcia to put Hickory ahead, 4-3, heading into the bottom of the 10th.
RHP Matt Nevarez (1-3) took over on the mound to try to slam the door on the BlueClaws for the second straight night, however, Lakewood strung together a rally and struck for two tallies in the 10th to take a 5-4, come-from-behind, walk-off win. 1B Jim Murphy drove in the game-winning run with a single to left field to score 2B Korby Mintken against RHP Fabio Castillo, though the run was charged to Nevarez. Nevarez was tagged with the loss for Hickory, while RHP Jordan Ellis (2-2) registered the win for Lakewood.
