
Power strike out twelve times in loss to Delmarva

Salisbury, MD (May 8, 2009) - The Delmarva Shorebirds recorded 12 strikeouts against the West Virginia Power on Friday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium and used a pair of big innings to take the series finale 7-1.
The Shorebirds used a trio of clutch hits and a wild pitch to score four times in the bottom of the second. With runners on second and third and two out, Tyler Cox struck out Victor Castillo, but a wild pitch on the dropped third strike allowed Castillo to reach and Jedidiah Stephen to score. Three consecutive two-out RBI singles from Xavier Avery, L.J. Hoes and Ron Welty followed to complete the four run frame.
Erik Huber recorded West Virginia's first hit of the game with one out single in the third inning and later scored the Power's lone run on Quincy Latimore's sacrifice fly. The Shorebirds used a three-run seventh inning to pull away. Avery started the inning with his third triple of the series and scored on a sacrifice fly from Hoes. Elvin Polanco ripped a two-out double later in the inning to bring in the game's final two runs.
Eddie Gamboa (3-0) tossed three scoreless innings of relief, allowed just one hit and fanned four to earn the victory. Cox (0-4) was tagged for four runs on six hits over two innings and suffered the loss. Yoffri Martinez and Eddie Pena combined to toss four scoreless innings of relief and struck out four batters for the Power.
West Virginia fell to 7-20 with the loss, and the Shorebirds improved to 15-10 with the victory. Quincy Latimore went 0-for-3, bringing his hitting streak to an end at five games, and his on base streak to an end at seven. Robbie Grossman returned to the lineup for the first time since Saturday and went 1-for-3, extending his on base streak to 13 games and his hitting streak to nine games. Adenson Chourio paced the Power for the second night in a row, going 3-for-3 with three base hits.
West Virginia will begin a five game series against the Hagerstown Suns at Municipal on Saturday night. Left hander Rudy Owens (2-1, 3.92) will start for West Virginia and the Suns will counter with right hander Paul Demny (0-0, 3.60). The first pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM.
