Charleston RiverDogs News Release
(Charleston, SC) - Asheville Tourists nemesis Melky Mesa hit a game-tying solo shot with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, and the Charleston Riverdogs beat Asheville in 11 innings Friday night. The Tourists (13-14) broke a scoreless tie in the top of the 9th with a bases loaded single from Beau Seabury. Charleston's Mesa then delivered his league-leading 7th homerun of the season to send the game into extras. Charleston won with a walk-off single from Taylor Grote to score David Adams. Asheville is now 0-5 in extra-inning affairs so far this year.
Alan DeRatt ( 1-1) pitched the bottom of the 11th inning for Asheville, and got tagged with the loss. David Adams led off the 11th inning with a walk and moved to second on an errant pickoff throw. Adams moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored the game-winning run on Grote's base hit.
The Tourists broke the scoreless tie in the 9th inning on Seabury's go-ahead single. With one out in the 9th, Kiel rolling singled to right and was lifted for pinch runner Carlos Martinez. Scott Robinson reached first on a bunt and both runners advanced on a David Christensen sacrifice bunt. Charleston intentionally walked Thomas Field to load the bases, setting the stage for catcher Beau Seabury. With the infield drawn in, Seabury delivered his second RBI of the season, giving Asheville a 1-0 lead.
Kurt Yacko entered in the ninth with the lead looking for his 4th save of the season. After retiring the first two batters he faced, Mesa smacked his 7th homerun of the season to tie the ballgame. Pat Venditte (2-1) pitched two scoreless innings for Charleston to earn the win.
Each starting pitcher tossed 4.2 shutout innings before giving way to their respective bullpens. Charleston's Hector Noesi (0-0) struck out seven and allowed just two hits in his outing. Asheville's Dan Houston scattered four hits and four walks with three strikeouts in his fifth start of the season.
The two teams will play again on Friday with the first pitch at 7:05 pm. The Tourists will send RHP Ethan Hollingsworth (1-1, 3.10) to the mound to face off against Charleston's RHP David Phelps (2-1, 4.33).
