Crawdads sweep DH against Lake County

One day after allowing their highest run total of the season, the Hickory Crawdads reasserted their pitching prowess at Lake County on their way to sweeping the Captains in a doubleheader. Hickory won game one 3-2 and took the night cap 6-2. On the night, Hickory pitchers combined to allow only five hits in the two games.

The Crawdads improved their record to a season high of two games over .500 at 15-13, leaving them at worst 1 ½ out of first place pending other South Atlantic League action.

Hickory took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one. Eric Fry worked a two-out walk and scored on a double by Matt West. The Crawdads followed nearly the same script in the second inning. Jared Bolden, fresh off the disabled list for Hickory, earned a lead off walk. Two outs later, Bolden scored on a double to left by Leonel De Los Santos to give Hickory a 2-0 lead.

The trio Wilmer Font, Mark Hamburger and Matt Nevarez kept the Captains in check as they combined to allow only two runs on three hits in the game.

Lake County manufactured a run in the third inning as Adam White collected the Captains first hit of the game on a leadoff bunt single. While stole second, went to third on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch by Font.

Hickory got the run back in the fourth inning as De Los Santos picked up his second RBI of the night to bring in Erik Morrison, who led off the inning with a single.

Lake County got to within 3-2 in their half of the fourth inning, scoring a run on a double play ball, but that would be all for the Captains.

Hamburger (1-1) picked up the win in relief, allowing only one hit in 2 2/3 innings, striking out two. Nevarez earned his fourth save of the season with a scoreless seventh inning, striking out two.

Danny Salazar took the loss in his first appearance of the season for Lake County.

In game two, Yoon-Hee Nam made his first start of the season a memorable one. Nam (3-1) pitched five innings allowing only a walk and a solo home run, striking out five hitters. Tyler Tufts earned his second save of the season allowing a run on one hit in two innings.

As in game one, Hickory took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game two as Erik Morrison hit a solo homer off starter T.J. House (1-3)

Lake County evened the score at 1-1 as Abner Abreu hit a solo homer to left That would be all for the Captains against Nam as he retired 15 of the 17 hitters he faced.

Hickory took the lead for good with a pair of runs in the fourth inning. Jason Ogata and Edward Martinez led off the inning with back-to back singles before Matt West followed with an RBI single to center to score Ogata. West scored later in the inning on an RBI single by Timmy Rodriguez.

Hickory went on to add a run in the 5th inning on an RBI single by Morrison, and two more runs in the 7th, including Timmy Rodriguez's first homer of the season to complete the scoring.

After an all night bus ride, Hickory begins a four-game series on Saturday at Lakewood (NJ); game time is scheduled for 4:05 pm. Fans can listen to the game on 92.1 FM WMNC with Andrew Buchbinder calling the play-by-play.
