The West Virginia Power were shut out by the Hickory Crawdads 8-0 Sunday at Appalachian Power Park. The Crawdads scored seven of the eight runs off home runs as the Power were shutout for the sixth time this season.
Hickory gained a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run home run by Christian Santana. The outfielder also hit a two-run shot on Saturday in a loss. The Crawdads extended the lead in the second when Michael Ortiz hit a two-run home run off Power starter Kyle McPherson. Hickory plated four seventh inning runs against Ryan Kelly, including three on the first home run of the season by Joe Bonadonna.
McPherson (3-5) took the loss and Neil Ramirez (5-3) picked up the win. West Virginia was limited to four hits by three Crawdads pitchers, including two by Rogelio Noris. The Power were shutout for the third time this month after having fallen May 9 to Kannapolis by a 4-0 final and last Sunday at Lakewood by a 3-0 score. West Virginia was shutout a total of five times during the 2009 season.
The Power and Crawdads close out this four-game series at 1:05 on Monday afternoon. West Virginia will start Jason Erickson against Hickory's Joe Wieland. Gates will open at noon on Memorial Day part of Coal Miner's Appreciation Day.
