Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release

A total of 24 runs were scored on the Sunday before Memorial Day in a doubleheader between the Kannapolis Intimidators and the Charleston RiverDogs as the two teams split the twin bill by the scores of 7-1 and 10-6 respectively. The Intimidators won the first game while the RiverDogs earned the split in game two.

In the first game, the Intimidators loaded the bases with one out in the first inning for Brady Shoemaker and the righty took the Kelvin Perez offering over the wall in center for a grand slam and a 4-0 first-inning lead. Perez (2-3) stayed in to face Shoemaker in the fifth as well and he hit another home run, a solo shot to make it 5-0.

Two runs is all the Intimidators would need, not the seven they scored as Cameron Bayne (3-6) went six strong innings allowing one unearned run on just four hits with five strikeouts. Garrett Johnson struck out two in the seventh to end the game and win the first of two games. Shoemaker reached three times, once on a walk and had five RBI, Miguel Gonzalez had two hits and Jesus Villegas, Rafael Vera and Jake Oester all hit doubles in the ballgame.

The second game started well for the Intimidators (26-25) as they racked up three runs in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead on starter Michael Solbach. Back-to-back doubles by Shoemaker and Thompson plated a run with Kevin Dubler plating a run on a groundout and Daniel Wagner grabbing an RBI-single. However things changed dramatically for Andre Rienzo and the Intimidators in the third and fourth innings.

Rienzo (0-1) worked two scoreless to start the ballgame but allowed a run in the third and ran into big trouble in the fourth. In the fourth, Rienzo allowed four straight to reach with one out before an RBI-groundout made it 4-3 in favor of the RiverDogs (22-29). With two outs, Rienzo struck out Ray Kruml, but the ball went for a wild pitch extending the inning long enough for Jimmy Paredes to hit a three-run home run off the new pitcher JR Ballinger. It was the first run off Ballinger this season in 23 innings pitched. After the six-run inning, and after adding another in the fifth, the RiverDogs led it 8-3.

However there was fight left in the Intimidators as they cut the lead to two in the fifth. Dubler reached on an error to lead the inning off and with one out Wagner, Rafael Vera and Kyle Colligan all doubled to cut the disadvantage to just two, but that's as close as it would get for the Intimidators. In the top of the next inning, the RiverDogs extended their lead back to four runs helped by two errors on the same play. Trayce Thompson exited the game in the fourth inning after getting hit with a pitch on his hand.

The Intimidators split their third of four doubleheaders this season and had their three game winning streak snapped in game two. The Intimidators look to win the series outright though with a win on Memorial Day which carries a special 1:05 pm start. Matt Wickswat looks to win his fifth straight decision and Josh Romanski will make his professional debut for Charleston.
