Rome, GA - The Rome Braves and Savannah Sand Gnats each won a game Sunday afternoon at State Mutual Stadium. Game one was the completion of a suspended game with Savannah winning the contest 8-2. The nightcap saw Rome bounce back with a 8-4 victory
In the suspended game, Rome scored in the second inning on a double play groundout that plated Jake Hanson. Savannah tied the game at 1-1 in the third on a Luis Rivera sacrifice fly to score Cesar Puello. Savannah posted five runs on the board in the seventh to take a 6-1 lead highlighted by an RBI singles by Nick Santomauro, Luis Rivera, Alonzo Harris, and Juan Lagares. Wilmer Flores had an RBI groundout for the fifth run of the inning. Rome added a run in the eighth but Savannah answered with two insurance runs in the ninth for the 8-2 final. Taylor Whitenton (3-2) gets the victory while David Hale (0-5) was the loser.
In game two, Savannah got on the board with two runs in the first but Rome tied the game in the bottom of the inning thanks to a two run homer by Robert Hefflinger (2). The Sand Gnats took a 4-2 lead in the third on a solo home run by Jefry Marte and an RBI single by Alex Gregory. Rome closed the gap with a run in the bottom half of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Hefflinger. The Braves tied the game in the fourth when Matt Weaver grounded into a double play to score Jake Hanson.
In the fifth, Rome took the lead on a Kyle Rose triple and a Mycal Jones double for the 5-4 score. The Jones - Rose tandem struck again in the seventh as Kyle Rose walked then stole second and Jones followed with a single to score Rose for the 6-4 lead. Jones advanced to second on the throw and later scored on a Cory Harrilchak single. Hefflinger picked up his fourth RBI of the game on a single to score Harrilchak to put the Braves in business for the 8-4 win.
Cory Rasmus (3-3) picks up the win for Rome while Savannah's Darin Gorski (1-2) gets the loss.
