Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release

DELMARVA, MD - With two outs in the eighth inning, the bases empty and the BlueClaws trailing 3-2, it seemed like Lakewood's struggling offense would cost them yet again.

Then three swings of the bat changed everything.

The BlueClaws pulled off a come-from-behind 4-3 win Sunday afternoon in Delmarva, keeping them 4.5 games back of first place Hickory in the SAL North.

Shorebirds starter Jesse Beal bullied Lakewood's bats through seven innings, allowing just two runs (one earned) on four hits. Beal retired 14 of the last 16 BlueClaws batters he faced.

Once Beal left the game in the eighth the BlueClaws offense finally awakened. Trailing 3-2 with two outs, Jonathan Villar doubled, and Leandro Castro doubled him home to tie the game at three. Jonathan Singleton then drove in his 16th run of the season on a base hit to put Lakewood up 4-3.

Luke Wertz (1-1) chipped in two scoreless innings out of the pen, and Jordan Ellis recorded his second save of the season.

The Birds got the tying run to second in the ninth before TJ Kelly popped out to end the game.

Nick Haughian (3-1) took his first loss for Delmarva, giving up five hits and two runs in two innings. The BlueClaws are now 6-1 after dropping two in a row in 2010.

Starter Matt Way was solid for Lakewood, giving up three runs (two earned) in six innings of work. Way also struck out four, and walked a career high three.

RHP Julio Rodriguez (0-0, 4.91) will make his second start as a BlueClaw on Monday, facing RHP Kenny Moreland (2-2, 5.22). First pitch is at 2:05 pm.

ClawsNotes: Jiwan James hit a solo shot in the third to tie the game at two. It was his first homer since the second game of the season on April 9th.
