Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
(Hickory, NC- July 25, 2014)- The West Virginia Power beat the Hickory Crawdads 6-1 at L.P. Frans Stadium on Friday night. West Virginia scored the first six runs of the game and received seven innings in a quality start from Dovydas Neverauskas to avoid a season series sweep at the hands of Hickory.
The Power jumped to an early lead against spot starter Frank Lopez in the top of the first inning. With two down, Austin Meadows and Edwin Espinal walked. Reese McGuire singled both in and gave West Virginia a 2-0 advantage.
West Virginia added a run in the third on a Michael Fransoso triple and a JaCoby Jones sacrifice fly. Espinal led off the fourth with a home run off reliever Akeem Bostick. The solo shot was the first baseman's fifth of the season and gave the Power a 4-0 lead. McGuire doubled in Jones and Erich Weiss added a sac fly in the sixth inning to cap the West Virginia lead at 6-0.
Hickory's lone run crossed on a solo home run by Nomar Mazara in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Neverauskas (5-9) pitched seven innings for the second time this season, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out five and walking four. Lopez (3-3) took the loss after surrendering the first two Power runs of the night. McGuire paced the offense with two hits and three runs batted in as the Power beat the Crawdads for the first time this season in ten games played.
West Virginia continues its current road trip through July 29 with a four-game set at Rome's State Mutual Stadium. Cody Dickson will start the series opener on Saturday evening against Yean Carlos Gil. First pitch is slated for 7:00 pm.
