Hagerstown Suns News Release
HAGERSTOWN, MD - RHP Lucas Giolito (6-2) pitched six innings of one-hit ball to lead the Hagerstown Suns (23-12, 67-38) to a 5-1 victory over the Kannapolis Intimidators (18-16, 47-54) on Friday night. The win gave Hagerstown the series win over Kannapolis two games to one.
After allowing an infield single to CF Adam Engel, who was the first batter of the game, Giolito never looked back. He retired the next 18 batters in a row, striking out seven. Giolito left the game after tossing six shutout innings. Intimidators starter LHP Andre Wheeler (1-3) allowed five runs and did not complete the fifth inning, taking the loss.
On offense, the Suns supported Giolito with solo homeruns from LF John Wooten and 1B Jimmy Yezzo, as well as four stolen bases. Centerfielder Narciso Mesa had two hits and stole three of the four bases.
In the bottom of the third inning Mesa doubled to right to open the frame before stealing third. He later scored on a wild pitch by Wheeler to make it 2-0. In the bottom of the fifth, Mesa stole both second and third base before C Spencer Kieboom's chopper to Wheeler allowed Mesa to score and make it 4-0.
Kannapolis broke the shutout when Giolito's replacement, LHP Joseph Webb, walked three batters in the seventh. Second baseman Christian Stringer drew the first of the walks in the inning, and he advanced from first to third on a stolen base and an error when neither SS Wilmer Difo nor 2B Brennan Middleton attempted to field Kieboom's throw down to second. Third baseman Trey Michalczewski later drove Stringer in with a groundout to cut the deficit to 5-1.
Webb tossed the final three innings for his first save of the year. He completed the third one-hitter of the Suns' season, the first since Nick Pivetta combined with two relievers to top the Greensboro Grasshoppers 9-1 on June 20.
The Suns will stay in Hagerstown for a four-game series against the Greenville Drive (8-27, 42-62), which begins on Saturday, July 26. The Suns will send RHP Wirkin Estevez (0-0) to the mound for his third start with the club. He will square off against RHP Teddy Stankiewicz (6-7) for Greenville. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.
