Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
Rome, GA - The Delmarva Shorebirds lost the series finale to the Rome Braves on Friday night. Rome scored three runs in the fifth inning to take a 4-2 lead, and the Braves never let go. With their third straight series loss, Delmarva (55-49, 17-18) fell back to under .500 in the second half.
The Braves drew first blood with a run off Shorebirds' ace Hunter Harvey in the first inning. After a single by Johan Camargo, Sean Godfrey ripped a double down the third base line to give Rome an early 1-0 lead.
Delmarva climbed in front with runs in the second and third. Chance Sisco scored on an RBI single by Jared Breen into right field. Breen was later stranded after reaching third base with just one out. The Shorebirds knocked three consecutive singles from Jeff Kemp, Drew Dosch and Creede Simpson to bring home another run in the third.
Rome battled back with the usual suspects doing damage off Hunter Harvey. Oliver and Camargo both singled at the top of the order in the fifth. Godfrey roped a two-run triple to take back the lead for Rome. A sacrifice fly by Ross Wilson gave the Braves' a 4-2 advantage.
Baserunning miscues hurt the Shorebirds' chances down the stretch. After a double, Tanner Rust was thrown out for the final out of the sixth, trying to steal third base. With two on, Creede Simpson was picked off first base to end the seventh.
Brandon Barker earned the win for Rome with two scoreless innings in relief. Harvey suffered his first loss of the second half, ending a streak of four straight wins for the starter. Caleb Dirks earned his first save with Rome by striking out all three batters in the ninth.
Delmarva now travels to Hickory, North Carolina for a three-game series with the Crawdads. Left-hander Mitch Horacek (5-8, 3.34) starts the opener against Hickory right-hander Tyler Smith (4-3, 3.87). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 pm at L.P. Frans Stadium on Saturday evening.
