Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
The West Virginia Power lost 3-2 to the Delmarva Shorebirds in game one of a doubleheader on Friday evening and had the second game of the twinbill suspended in the third with a 7-1 Power lead. The second game will be resumed at 6:05 on Saturday night at Appalachian Power Park.
In the first game, West Virginia took a 1-0 lead in the second on a run-scoring single by Elias Diaz. The Power led 2-0 after three when Jose Osuna singled in Taylor Lewis.
Zack Dodson shut down the Shorebirds over three innings before Jerome Pena hit a solo home run to lead off the fourth. Delmarva added a run on a fielder's choice in the inning to tie the score at two apiece. The Shorebirds took the ledthe next inning of a solo home run by Sammie Starr.
West Virginia managed base runners in each of the final three innings, but could not bring the tying run home. The Power went 2-11 with runners in scoring position and stranded five on base in the loss.
Dodson (4-6) took the loss while Miguel Chalas (9-4) earned the victory. Zach Petersime earned his second save with two scoreless innings of relief.
In the suspended nightcap, Delmarva tallied a run in the first on two West Virginia errors. The Power quickly backed spot starter Mike Jefferson with two runs of support in the bottom half of the first inning on three singles, including run-scoring hits by Gregory Polanco and Ashley Ponce.
West Virginia sent ten men to the plate in the bottom of the second, scoring five runs on five hits, a walk, a hit batter, and two Delmarva errors.
The top of the third inning was played in a light rain shower that gradually got heavier and forced the grounds crew to put the tarp on the field. The ground was then deemed unplayable and the game was suspended. Francisco Aponte will be at the plate to start the bottom of the third inning for West Virginia when play is resumed on Saturday. The regularly scheduled game will be played in a seven-inning, doubleheader fashion.
The gates at Appalachian Power Park will open at 5:00 pm on Saturday. The Power and Shorebirds are slated to meet on Sunday afternoon as well during the brief four-game homestand.
