Hagerstown, MD - The Augusta GreenJackets broke out their hitting shoes to win game one of a doubleheader by a 10-3 score over the Hagerstown Suns on Friday night before the bullpen held on to a slim 1-0 lead to earn the win in the nightcap in Augusta's second doubleheader sweep of the year, but first on the road.
In game one, Jose Flores broke open a 3-3 tie with a two-run double in the fifth on his third hit of the day. Then in the seventh, the GreenJackets sent 11 to the plate to score five more times and put the game out of reach. Shawn Payne and Devin Harris reached with RBI singles, Brett Krill was hit by a pitch with the bases full to bring home a run before Joe Staley doubled home two more to cap the frame.
Steven Neff (3-1) earned the win in relief with two scoreless innings of one-hit ball. Bryce Bandilla allowed three runs - all unearned - in four innings of relief in the start for the GreenJackets.
Hagerstown struck first with two runs in the second to take a 2-0 lead. Brett Newsome tripled home a run and Hendry Jimenez followed with an RBI double - both with two outs - after an error at the start of the inning opened the door for the Suns. The GreenJackets tied the game in the third on a Jesus Galindo RBI single and Payne's run-scoring groundout before taking a 3-2 lead in the fourth on Brett Krill's RBI double. The Suns would tie things at three in the fourth after getting runners at second and third with no outs on a pair of singles and an error. Bryce Ortega's sacrifice fly brought home the tying run - where the game remained until the fifth.
Greg Holt (2-2) took the loss in relief for the Suns, allowing six runs - five earned - on six hits and a walk in 2.1 innings.
In the nightcap, the GreenJackets pounded out ten hits, but couldn't take advantage of early scoring opportunities before finally pushing a run across in the seventh inning en route to a 1-0 win. With Jose Cuevas at second after a walk and a stolen base, and two outs in the inning, Galindo dumped a single into left field to score Cuevas with the game's lone run and give the GreenJackets a 1-0 edge. Cody Hall fired a perfect seventh inning, striking out two, to earn his league-leading 19th save of the year and pull the GreenJackets to an overall .500 record for the first time all season.
The GreenJackets had many scoring opportunities, picking up ten hits in the game, but couldn't break through with a run until the seventh. They had the bases loaded with no one out in the second and came up empty-handed. In the third, a pickoff play took a critical runner off the bases. Krill was thrown out at the plate trying to score on Jeff Arnold's fourth-inning single on a play that allowed the game to remain scoreless. The GreenJackets also committed the third out of the sixth inning at third, running themselves out of another chance.
Kyle Crick fired five scoreless innings of three-hit ball in the no decision for the GreenJackets. He walked five on a sloppy night, but he also struck out five. Kyle Vazquez (3-2) earned the win in relief after a perfect sixth inning while Colin Bates (4-3) was tagged with the loss for Hagerstown.
The GreenJackets are now 8-6 in doubleheader games and earned their ninth shutout win of the season in the nightcap. Augusta has now won all four 1-0 games they've been a part of this season and the nightcap victory was also their league-leading 24th one-run win of the year.
Augusta sends Adalberto Mejia (6-6, 5.55) to the mound on Saturday in search of their third straight win against Hagerstown's Brian Rauh (0-0, 0.00). First pitch from Hagerstown comes at 7:05 p.m. with radio pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1340 AM and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
