July 20, 2012 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Lexington Legends News Release
(GREENVILLE, S.C.) The Lexington Legends took a 7-4 win over the Greenville Drive Friday night in a game shortened to seven innings because of rain.
The Legends took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on singles by Matt Duffy and Mike Kvasnicka, a walk to Nolan Fontana and a sacrifice fly by Justin Gominsky. Greenville evened the score in the bottom of the third on a walk to Nick Natoli and a triple by Jose Garcia.
Lexington moved in front in the fourth. Duffy was hit by a pitch for the league-leading 23rd time, and moved to third when Kvasnicka's ground ball got past first baseman Boss Moanaroa for an error. Fontana walked again, loading the bases, and another sacrifice fly by Gominsky gave the Legends a 2-1 lead.
Greenville took the lead back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. With one out, David Renfroe doubled, Moanaroa walked, and after Drew Turocy struck out, Renfroe came around to score when Blake Swihart reached base on an error by Fontana at shortstop. Moanaroa and Swihart both scored on a double to left field by Cody Koback, and the Drive had a 4-2 lead.
The Legends answered quickly with three runs in the top of the fifth. A double by Delino DeShields Jr. and a single by Ruben Sosa produced one run. Zach Johnson doubled, scoring Sosa with the tying run, and Johnson scored on a double by Brandon Meredith, putting Lexington in front 5-4.
In the top of the sixth against Greenville reliever Nefi Ogando, DeShields drew a two-out walk. Sosa followed with his third hit of the game, and DeShields and Sosa executed a double steal, leaving runners at first and second. Both scored on Johnson's double to give the Legends their final margin. Johnson's three runs batted in increased his South Atlantic League-leading total to 79, and DeShields had two steals in the game to run his total to 69, also best in the league.
Legends starter Juri Perez (1-1)worked the first five and one-third innings and picked up his first victory as a Legend. Greenville starter Jason Garcia (4-5) was the losing pitcher.
The two teams will meet again Saturday. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
