Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
Savannah, GA - For the second night in a row, the Rome Braves bested the Gnats by a single run, defeating Savannah 3-2 in front of 2,093 fans at Historic Grayson Stadium Friday night. Starter Alex Panteliodis tied a Gnats' individual season-high with 10 strikeouts and Gnats' pitching struck out 15, evening their team-high in a nine-inning game.
The Braves (16-12/34-64) scored single runs in three different innings to build a 3-0 lead. Rome took a 1-0 advantage in the top of the first, three batters into the game. CF Tony Mueller singled, stole second and came home on an RBI groundout by 1B William Beckwith.
A fifth inning double-steal made it 2-0 Rome. With runners at first and third, Panteliodis picked off the runner, Brandon Drury, at first. Gnats' first baseman Cole Frenzel chased Drury towards second, allowing Will Skinner to come home with the Braves' second run.
Panteliodis finished six innings, yielding just those two runs on six hits and a walk while striking out 10, but took the loss to fall to 3-5 with a 3.84 ERA.
Rome added a run against reliever Jared West in the seventh on an RBI double from SS Elmer Reyes.
The Gnats (11-17/52-43) had runners aboard in five of the first seven innings, but could not score until the eighth when 3B Dustin Lawley launched a two-run homerun to bring Savannah within a run at 3-2. Lawley leads active Gnats with 10 homeruns.
The Gnats will send LHP Jimmy Fuller (2-2, 6.00) to the mound in game three of the series against LHP David Starn (0-0, 7.56) Saturday, with first pitch scheduled for 6:05. Gates at Historic Grayson Stadium open at 5:00 pm. The pre-game show on the radio broadcast, presented by Subway, on News/Talk 630 and online at sandgnats.com begins at 5:45 pm.
