Power Level Series with 8-2 Win Over Shorebirds

Charleston, W. Va. - The West Virginia Power (59-63, 24-30) scored eight runs over the first four innings and cruised to an 8-2 win over the Delmarva Shorebirds (58-64, 19-35) on Friday night at Appalachian Power Park. All eight of the West Virginia runs were scored with two outs on the board.

The Power cracked the scoreboard in the first inning. With two outs, Justin Howard hit a single to score Mel Rojas Jr., who reached on a walk.

The Power added three more runs in the third. After Jarret Martin struck out the first two hitters he faced, he issued back-to-back walks. Chase Lyles singled in one run and Dan Grovatt followed with a two-run single to right-center field to give the Power a 4-0 lead.

West Virginia tacked on four more runs in the fourth to build an 8-0 advantage. The Shorebirds committed two errors in the inning, one by Riley Hornback and one by Martin. The Power used four hits to score four runs.

The Shorebirds scored their only two runs of the night in the sixth inning. Michael Mooney hit a one out double down the left field line. Riley Hornback extended his hitting streak to five games with a single to put runners at first and third. Joe Oliveira followed with a double to left-center field to score Mooney. Then, Ty Kelly hit a tapper to third to plate Hornback, which cut the deficit to 8-2.

Jarret Martin allowed seven hits and eight runs, only three of which were earned, over 3.2 innings. He struck out four batters and walked four batters.

Luis Noel entered in the fourth inning and shutout the Power over the final 4.1 innings. He surrendered just two hits. Noel struck out three and walked two. He has not allowed an earned run in his last seven appearances.

West Virginia starter Eliecer Navarro earned the win in six strong innings. He scattered five hits and fanned four batters.

The Shorebirds square off with the West Virginia Power in game three on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. RHP Parker Bridwell is the scheduled starter.
