Charleston Snaps Four-Game Skid in 1-0 Nailbiter

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Four Charleston pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout, and an unearned run in the second was enough in a 1-0 triumph over Augusta in South Atlantic League action at Lake Olmstead Stadium Friday night.

With the victory, the RiverDogs ended a four-game losing streak in posting their first shutout since July 24, improving to 23-31, 49-75 overall, while Augusta dipped to 30-22, 61-61 overall.

Charleston struck first for a 1-0 lead in the second inning off Augusta's Shawn Sanford. Taylor Grote and Anderson Feliz hit consecutive one-out singles, and Grote came into score on a two-out throwing error.

The Dogs only posted one more hit over the final seven innings, but got a yeoman's effort from the pitching staff in the whitewashing.

RiverDogs starter Manny Barreda worked 4.0 innings in his longest outing of the season, permitting just three Augusta single, while walking one and fanning four. The 5'11 right-hander has not allowed a run in his last 13.1 innings of work.

Brett Gerritse (1-0) twirled 2.0 scoreless frames with a pair of strikeouts in his SAL debut, while Aaron Dott followed with 2.0 more perfect stanzas fanning four, and Mark Montgomery stayed a perfect 12-for-12 in save chances retiring the side in order in the ninth. Overall, the last 10 Augusta batters and 16 of the last 17 were set down.

Sanford (9-9), the SAL's leader in ERA, gave up just the one unearned tally in 8.0 excellent innings for the second time this year against Charleston, issuing no walks and punching out three in an extremely hard-luck loss. In five starts versus the RiverDogs, Sanford has allowed only two earned runs in 36.0 innings of work.

Game three of the series, set for Saturday at 7:05 p.m., has Charleston right-hander Shane Greene (4-11, 3.82 ERA), while Augusta counters with right-hander Taylor Rogers (9-9, 2.96 ERA), who ranks second in the league in ERA and is the reigning SAL Pitcher of the Week.
