Augusta GreenJackets News Release

Augusta, GA - Despite eight near-flawless innings from Shawn Sanford, the Augusta GreenJackets fell 1-0 to the Charleston RiverDogs as they failed to support one of their best starters in front of 4,004 on Friday night at Lake Olmstead Stadium.

The lone run of the game crossed the plate in the second inning after the RiverDogs put two men in scoring position with two outs. Taylor Grote and Anderson Feliz hit back-to-back singles and moved into scoring position on a double steal. Jeff Farnham hit a groundball to shortstop, but Bobby Haney's throwing error allowed Farnham to reach and Grote to score the game's only run.

Sanford (9-9) picked up his second loss in as many starts, but was a tough-luck loser this time around. After allowing nine earned runs - a season-high - on Sunday in Greensboro, Sanford allowed just one unearned run on four hits and a walk in eight innings. Sanford struck out three and got just two of his 24 putouts on fly balls to the outfield.

The RiverDogs used a team effort on the mound in the victory. Charleston starter Manny Barreda threw four scoreless innings of three-hit ball in just his third start of the year. Limited by a tight pitch count, Barreda was replaced by Brett Gerritse in the fifth. Gerritse (1-0), in his RiverDogs debut, fired two scoreless innings of one-hit ball to get the win. Aaron Dott followed with two perfect innings, striking out four of the six hitters he faced, while Mark Montgomery fired a perfect ninth inning for his 12th save in as many attempts.

Mazzola had two of the team's four hits. The GreenJackets had just one of those four hits after the fourth inning. The loss is Augusta's second 1-0 setback this season and their 12th shutout loss of the year while Charleston won for just the fifth time in 16 games against the GreenJackets this season.

With the series even at one, the GreenJackets turn to Taylor Rogers (9-9, 2.96) on the mound against Charleston's Shawn Greene (4-11, 3.82) on Saturday night in an attempt to win their second of this series. It'll also be the penultimate Sparkling Saturday of the season, with postgame fireworks presented by NBC Augusta, MCG Health and Kicks 99. First pitch comes at 7:05 p.m. with radio pregame coverage beginning at 6:50, airing on WRDW-AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com .

Single-game tickets for any GreenJackets home game are currently available by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS while further information can be found online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
