The West Virginia Power survived a ninth inning rally and defeated the Lexington Legends 4-3 at Applebee's Park Friday night.
The Power scored all of their runs in the first inning. With one out, Jarek Cunningham reached base on an error by first baseman Aaron Bray. David Rubenstein followed with a single and Aaron Baker was hit by a pitch from Lexington starter Jose Cisnero to load the bases. Cunningham scored when Ramon Cabrera grounded into a force play at third, leaving runners at first and second. Cisnero hit Rogelio Noris with a pitch to load the bases again, and Jesus Brito tripled on a fly ball that dropped just inside the right field line, putting West Virginia in front 4-0.
The Legends scored a run in the bottom of the fourth when J.D. Martinez tripled and came home on Jonathan Meyer's infield out.
The score remained 4-1 until the bottom of the ninth. West Virginia reliever Duke Welker retired Jiovanni Mier on a fly ball to right field, but then walked four consecutive batters, forcing home a run to make the score 4-2 and leaving the bases loaded.
After Marc Baca replaced Welker, pinch-hitter Miguel Arrendell lined a single to right field, scoring Jake Goebbert from third to cut the lead to one, but Jonathan Meyer, carrying the tying run, had to hold at third. Brian Kemp then grounded into a double play to end the game.
West Virginia starter Kyle McPherson (4-5), who had pitched seven innings of no-hit baseball against the Legends in Charleston May 25, got the win. Cisnero (3-3) took the loss. Zach Grimmett relieved Cisnero in the sixth inning, and pitched four perfect innings.
The Legends play at Hickory Saturday night. Game time is 7:00.
