Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
SAVANNAH, GA - Mark Cohoon tossed a complete game shutout to lead the Savannah Sand Gnats (32-24) past the Asheville Tourists by a 6-0 score Friday night at Historic Grayson Stadium. Cohoon needed 107 pitches to throw the first nine-inning complete game shutout in the South Atlantic Legue this year. He struck out 10 Tourists, and walked one.
The Gnats' win, combined with a Rome Braves' loss in Augusta, moves Savannah to just two games behind the GreenJackets for first place in the SAL Southern Division.
It was the second time this year that Cohoon threw nine shutout innings. He blanked the Delmarva Shorebirds through nine innings in Delmarva on May 5th, in a game the Gnats eventually won 1-0 in 12 innings.
The Gnats offense waited until the fifth to start scoring. In the fifth, with two outs, after C Dock Doyle and 1B Alex Gregory drew walks, DH Pedro Zapata lined a two-run double over the head of the Tourists' LF Tyler Massey.
Savannah added four more runs in the seventh inning. Gregory chased tiring Tourists' starter Chris Balcom-Miller with an RBI double to left that made the score 3-0. 2B Alonzo Harris then tripled into left field to plate two more runs for a 5-0 lead. CF Juan Lagares drove home Harris with a single through the right side to complete the game's scoring.
The Gnats begin a four-game series against the Kannapolis Intimidators Saturday night with RHP Armando Rodriguez (2-4, 3.42) on the hill against the Intimidators' RHP Andre Rienzo (0-1, 12.54) with first pitch scheduled for 6:05 pm.
