Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
HAGERSTOWN, MD - On the strength of four home runs and seven plus solid innings from starter Matt Way, the BlueClaws beat Hagerstown 6-3 Friday night to clinch an important series win.
Lakewood (32-24) has taken six out of their last eight against the Suns (29-26) to jump three games ahead of Hagerstown in second place in the SAL North, two games back of first.
Leandro Castro's team-leading sixth home run of the season, a two-run shot, got the BlueClaws on the board in the fourth 2-0.
It was still 2-0 in the seventh when Alan Schoenberger brought in a run on a triple to make it 3-0. Jonathan Singleton and Sebastian Valle added two big insurance runs in the eighth with the first back-to-back homers for Lakewood this season, giving the Claws a five run lead.
Hagerstown answered back with three in the bottom half of the inning, but Anthony Hewitt hit his fifth homer of the year in the ninth to make it 6-3, and Jordan Ellis (S, 4) pitched a perfect inning, striking out the side to secure the win.
Matt Way (W, 4-4) was brilliant for the BlueClaws. He took a perfect game into the fifth before allowing a leadoff base hit, but made it through 7.1 innings, allowing just two runs on four hits.
Trevor Holder took the loss for the Suns despite giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits in 6 innings. He also struck out nine batters on the evening.
The BlueClaws now come home for a four game series against the Greensboro Grasshoppers. RHP Julio Rodriguez (1-0, 3.12) will make his third start as a BlueClaws against RHP Matt Montgomery (4-5, 3.11). First pitch is at 7:05 pm.
