Hickory Crawdads News Release
CHARLESTON, SC -The Hickory Crawdads struck for four runs in the fourth inning, en route to the 5-3 win in the series finale against the Charleston RiverDogs before 3,593 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park on Friday night.
After the RiverDogs (24-31) plated two runs (only one earned) in the first three innings against RHP Neil Ramirez (6-3), the Crawdads (34-22) battled back with four runs in the top of the fourth. RF Jared Prince started the inning with a double to left field against RHP Jose Ramirez (2-3). CF Miguel Velazquez then ripped an RBI double of his own down the left field line, plating Prince. C Zach Zaneski was hit by a pitch and LF Cristian Santana singled up the middle to load the bases with no outs. After Velazquez scored on a wild pitch to tie the game, 3B Matt West worked a walk to reload the bases. 2B Travis Adair followed with an RBI walk, before DH Mike Ortiz drove a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring the fourth run of the frame and lifting Hickory into the 4-2 lead.
The Crawdads added to their lead with a run against RHP Gabriel Tatis in the top of the seventh. Prince doubled to left again and was promptly brought home by a Velazquez RBI single down the third base line, making it 5-2.
After Neil Ramirez struck out the first batter in the bottom of the seventh, LHP Joseph Ortiz took over on the mound. The RiverDogs connected on three straight singles to load the bases with just the one out. RHP Tyler Tufts entered the game and induced a fielder's choice and caught a runner trying to steal for the final two outs in the inning, while only allowing one run to come in, keeping Hickory ahead by multiple runs, 5-3.
Tufts then dealt a scoreless eighth and RHP Trevor Hurley slammed the door with a shutout ninth to wrap up the 5-3 win for the Crawdads. Neil Ramirez earned the win with 6.1 innings of work and only one earned run allowed, while Hurley logged the save. Jose Ramirez was tagged with the loss for the RiverDogs.
