Four-Run Fourth Leads Hickory to 5-3 Win Over R'Dogs

CHARLESTON, SC - A four-run fourth inning put Hickory ahead for good, as the Crawdads held off the Charleston RiverDogs, 5-3, in front 3,593 fans in South Atlantic League action at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park Friday night.

With the victory Hickory ends a two-game losing skid and improves to 34-22, while the RiverDogs fall to 24-31.

Charleston jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second against Neil Ramirez, when DeAngelo Mack's groundball to first was mishandled into right field, which allowed Luke Murton to score.

Jimmy Paredes upped the advantage to 2-0 in the second with a sacrifice fly.

After three hitless innings against Charleston's Jose Ramirez, Hickory saw its first six men reach base in the fourth in seizing a 4-2 lead. Jared Prince doubled and then scored on Miguel Velazquez RBI double. Zach Zaneski was hit by a pitch, and Cristian Santana lined a single to centerfield to load the bases.

A Ramirez wild pitch brought Velazquez to plate, and Matt West was walked to re-load the sacks. Travis Adair was issued a bases-loaded free pass to give the Crawdads the lead, and Mike Ortiz finished the festivities with a sacrifice fly.

Velazquez roped another RBI double in the seventh against Gabriel Tatis for a 5-2 margin.

The RiverDogs notched three straight base his with one out in the bottom half against reliever Joe Ortiz to load the bases. Tyler Tufts was then inserted, and Paredes cut the score to 5-3 with a RBI fielder's choice. However, with Luke Murton at the plate as the go-ahead run, Paredes was caught stealing second base when Tufts stepped off the rubber to nab him.

In the ninth inning, Kelvin Castro reached on an error to leadoff and moved to second on a wild pitch. After a flyout, Slade Heathcott drew a walk to put the tying run at first, but Trevor Hurley proceeded to fan J.R. Murphy and get Paredes to groundout to collect his sixth save of the year.

Neil Ramirez (6-3) won for the third time in four starts, permitting two runs in 6.1 innings with five strikeouts. Jose Ramirez (2-4) lost for the third time in four starts, surrendering four runs in 5.1 innings, while hitting three batters, walking a season-high five and sinking three.

Rob Lyerly led Charleston's charge with a 3-for-4, two-double performance, while Heathcott, Murphy and Ray Kruml all added two hits for the RiverDogs.

The RiverDogs begin another four-game series against the Rome Braves, the Single-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves, Saturday at 7:05 p.m. Charleston sends right-hander Kelvin Perez (2-3, 3.42) to the mound, while Rome counters with left-hander Chris Masters (1-3, 1.42).
