MONDAY: West Virginia lost 12-8 to the Lexington Legends at Appalachian Power Park. The Power trailed 3-0 after two but hit four home runs over the next four innings and built a 6-3 lead after seven. Each club scored two in the eighth before Lexington plated seven runs in the ninth against Marc Baca. West Virginia won two out of five during the series.
TOO MUCH BUT NOT ENOUGH: West Virginia surrendered seven runs in the ninth inning on Monday, marking the most runs the pitching staff has allowed in any one inning this season. Power batters also hit a season-high four home runs on Monday, including three solo shots.
HONORED... AND GOODBYE: On Monday, Nathan Baker was honored by the South Atlantic League as the Pitcher of the Week. The southpaw went 1-0 from July 5 though 11, with an ERA of 0.00 over two starts, including eight no-hit innings at Hagerstown on July 6. On Wednesday, Pittsburgh promoted Baker to the Bradenton Marauders roster. The SAL All-Star was 6-5 with a 2.99 earned run average this season.
HELLO AGAIN: The Pirates filled the open Power roster spot by transferring Melkin Laureano back to West Virginia from Bradenton. Laureano began the year with the Power, going 2-3 with a 2.83 ERA over ten outings, including five starts, and was promoted to Bradenton on May 24. During his stint in the Florida State League, the right-hander went 3-1 with a 3.82 earned run average.
STILL STREAKING: Aaron Baker singled in the second inning to extend his hitting streak to nine straight games, his longest of the season. Baker is batting .394 during his nine-game streak with 13 hits in 33 at bats. The first baseman has hit two home runs and driven in 11.
THE K-MAN: Kyle McPherson struck out 11 batters over five and two-thirds on Friday, setting a new single game high by any Power pitcher this season. The right-hander owned the previous high by striking out 10 Shorebirds in a May 19 win over Delmarva. McPherson has 94 strikeouts this season, second most in the SAL, and trails only Brandon Moore. Moore began the year with Savannah and struck out 98, but has been promoted to St. Lucie.
CATCH THIS: Pittsburgh promoted Jairo Marquez to the Power roster on Sunday and transferred Pat Irvine back to the State College roster. Marquez signed with the Pirates as a non-drafted free agent in 2007 and has played in the VSL, GCL, and NYPL during his career. The catcher began his 2010 season with State College, appearing in four games, batting .167 with a run batted in. Irvine hit .212 in ten games for the Power.
WALK THIS WAY: Evan Chambers has walked 68 times this year to lead the South Atlantic League. Chambers ranks third across all of Minor League Baseball, trailing only Kila Ki'aihue of Omaha (77) and Conner Crumbliss of Kane County (74). The Lakeland, Florida native has walked in 53 of the 83 games he has played in this season (64%).
POWER POINTS: West Virginia committed five errors Sunday marking the third time this year they have been charged with five or more miscues... Power pitchers have blown a save in three straight games with the club having gone 1-2 during that span...
ON THE AIR: All 140 West Virginia Power games can be heard on ESPN Radio 1490 AM in Charleston, WV, across the state on the Power Radio Network, and online at milb.com. Adam Marco will call the action for each of the 70 home games this season, while the home team will provide coverage while the Power are on the road.
