Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
Over the past 13 games the Kannapolis Intimidators have alternated wins and losses. That pattern ended as the Intimidators lost a 2-1 lead, allowing five runs in the seventh to the Lakewood BlueClaws, losing the game by the score of 6-2. The game was the first in a five game home series with the first half champions.
Both starters began their respective seasons in their team's bullpen and for both Ryan Buch and Joshua Zeid, they pitched well as starters on Wednesday. Buch in his first game back with Kannapolis since leaving the team on May 17th went five innings, allowing one run on three hits, two walks and five strikeouts. It was his fifth start of the season, four came with the Bristol White Sox.
Zied, who has appeared 28 times from the pen, made his fourth start and also went five innings and allowed only an RBI-groundout off the bat of Ian Gac, scoring Kyle Colligan in the third.
After the starters exited, at a 1-1 game in the sixth, the Intimidators (7-13) off Chad Poe (1-0) had Ian Gac reach in a walk, followed by a single by Nick Ciolli and a one out double by Juan Silverio to plate Gac. The Intimidators took a 2-1 lead.
However in the seventh, after a strong inning from Zach Piccola, JR Ballinger was summoned and allowed a single to lead off the inning to Sebastian Valle, then struck out Stephen Batts before a walk and a two-run double by Anthony Hewitt made it a 3-2 BlueClaws (13-6) lead. Ballinger then allowed a single, a sacrifice fly and a walk before being taken from the ballgame in favor of Chase Cooney. Conney came on and allowed both of the inherited runners to score, one on a double, the other on a wild pitch and the BlueClaws had a five-run inning, all of the runs charged to Ballinger (0-4) and a 6-2 lead they would not relinquish.
The loss is the second in a row for the Intimidators where they held a lead past the mid-point of the ballgame and look for better results in game two of the series on Thursday at 7:05 as Matt Hopps will take to the hill and he will be opposed by Brody Colvin.
